Cheating the UL and CE

i’ve seen this a LOT.  products are UL or CE approved, then when they actually go to market, parts are left out to save money.  This 12vdc power supply is a perfect example, they left out the upstream line filter, a choke, and two capacitors.  i’m going to start a new category for these things when i find them.

DSCN1484

you can see here the AC power cord, the fuse, and a single filter capacitor (red).  MIssing is the bifilar choke, and two large capacitors.  these are usually expensive (compared to other components) and often have to be hand installed.  leaving these out likely reduced the cost of parts 5 to 10%.

DSCN1483

also missing are two capacitors likely to filter the main chopper transistor to the right.

what does this mean? it means this power supply when running under load made all sorts of very strong radio signals that can interfere with other nearby electronics.  these missing components kept the unit “clean”, which is what the UL and CE inspections look for.  this unit for sure was in violation of FCC part 15, messed up all my satellite reception (UHF) and birdied all over the HF.  it was sold with a nice 12v peltier refrigerator so was expected to be used in the garage or in the field i suppose?

they passed these inspections, then took out the parts that made them pass.

very much like the factory taking out the catalytic converter in your car after passing smog.

or VW jacking the computer in diesels?

SolarPanel Telemetry

finally got the Rogue MPT-3048 hooked up to a VM copy of XP so to get telemetry from my 2nd solar system.  it’s not much, but enough i can reverse the serial protocol, and code up something that will run on linux and osx to do the same data collection.

Licking Machine version 4

dialing it in.  licking machine torque sensing control version 4.  will be bringing prototype to the TTITD, stop by L3K at 7:45-F if you’d like to test it out or have input on the GUI and reaction profiles.

fuse autopsy

so, these are $7 or so replacement.  i guess by crushing the glass ahead of time, a serious pop the glass will still be around where the continuing arc would be.  anyone have more specifics on the white glass-like filler?  fluke dmm-11a 1000v multimeter fuse.

old battery charger diodes

do you have one of those old car battery chargers?  you know, crappy metal box, big heavy transformer inside?  i WANT YOUR DIODES from it.  i mean, if you’re not using them of course.  the V rating might be low for my 45-50V panel feeds, but the current should be sufficient.  bonus: already attached to heat sink (needed when one is in shadow and the other in sun).  will test 4 rolls at once soon.
