MakeTruck: Computer Module
The Computer Module is a complete computer lab in a box. Designed for small group sizes, a shelving rack for wireless equipped laptops provides the bulk of the module. Equipped with power strips, extension cords, and a wireless access point, the module also serves as an internet base and charging point. Basic digital cameras allow Makers to document their projects, then use the laptops to create web pages or digital presentations of their work. Basic micro controller (MCU) programmers and interfaces can be included to provide automation and connection to projects and robots (Arduino, MakeController, MiniPOV, etc).
Tools:
- Students: Laptops with wireless, batteries, and AC adapters.
- Instructor: Laptop with wireless, a large external LCD monitor and/or LCD projector.
- Power: laptops are stored in slots that have a built in charge point.
- Internet: a wireless access point or router enables the entire lab to connect to a single connection
- Cameras: cheap digital still camera and/or digital video cameras and required upload readers/cables
- MCU/Robotics: basic computer interfaces and software for communicating with MCU (AVR, Pic, etc)
Materials:
- blank CDR to allow students to take home media and code files
- still and video camera media (flash disk, DV tapes, etc)
Projects:
- Computers: basic computer use, text editing, picture processing, internet access and uploading
- Project Pages: Makers are able to document their work with web pages, pictures, and video.
- Research: with internet access, Makers can search online for related information.
- Robotics: basic introduction to using MCU's to control and monitor devices and robotics.
